Gamuda Academy: A Creative Learning Hub

Transforming Old Shop Lots into an Urban Oasis

The Gamuda Academy, designed by Mil Yung Mak and Edward Lye, is a vibrant and innovative learning center located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This unique project has breathed new life into five 30-year-old shop lots, creating a dynamic space for employees and members of the local community to advance their professional skills. The academy also houses The Enabling Academy, a platform that trains young people with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for the workforce.

The design of the Gamuda Academy is inspired by vibrant pops of color, bold graphics, and dual-functioned spaces that provoke creativity. The entrance features a wow-factor hotel-like reception, setting the tone for the entire space. Through a combination of lighting selections, funky furniture, and an extensive variety of fun materials like artificial turf, bold-patterned flooring, mural walls, and writable walls, the design creates a dynamic environment for creative learning. The concept is driven by three key words: Interaction, Collaboration, and Flexibility.

One of the unique features of the Gamuda Academy is its emphasis on flexibility and adaptability. The training rooms are equipped with movable walls in acoustic finish, allowing for different capacities and group usages. Loose furniture like beanbags and modular poufs are used in common areas, providing lightweight and mobile seating options that can be easily rearranged for different events or stored away. Training tables and chairs are designed with wheels, promoting a more collaborative space usage.

The Gamuda Academy encompasses a library, a management office, training rooms, BIM and computer rooms, a cafeteria, and hang-out areas on each floor. Each floor has a unique name and color, creating a stronger sense of place. The building is also handicapped-friendly, with a lift and ramps where necessary.

Since its opening in April 2017, the Gamuda Academy has garnered attention from employees and members of the public. The spaces are well-utilized, and when fully utilized, the building can accommodate up to 300 people. However, there have been some challenges along the way. The absence of as-built drawings and unexpected structural and M&E issues posed difficulties during the construction process. Despite these challenges, the design team successfully transformed the old building into a creative and collaborative lifestyle learning hub.

The Gamuda Academy has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The academy's design integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.

The Gamuda Academy is a testament to the power of design in transforming spaces and creating environments that foster creativity and collaboration. It stands as a shining example of how old buildings can be revitalized into vibrant hubs of learning and innovation.
